The Merseyside giants Liverpool were knocked out of the FA Cup by Tim Sherwood’s Aston Villa on Sunday. Brendan Rodgers wants his team to bounce back from the defeat and end the season on a strong and positive note.
Prior to the match against LVG’s Manchester United, Liverpool looked in a very strong position to reach the top four. Two defeats in their last five league games has broken their momentum and has put them at the mercy of other teams. The 18-time English champions are seven points behind the fourth place Manchester City but they have a game in hand. Although one slip could put them below Spurs and Southampton on the Premier League table.
“Our ambition is to be better and plan forward, that means bringing in players in the summer. Plans to do that are well under way,” Brendan Rodgers said. “We want to finish the season strong and take that momentum into the following season. We have to fight for the top four until the very end. If other clubs make mistakes then we have to ensure we’re ready to take advantage. The expectancy is huge, but I can’t fault the players for what they give. Last week was a disappointment but they have worked very well in training.”
Jordan Henderson has signed a new deal with club which would keep him at Anfield until 2019. The English giants will travel to the Hawthorns without Lucas, Sturridge and Sakho. Adam Lallana and Flanagan are also nearing full fitness and can make a comeback very soon.
Three successive defeats since the win against Stoke City had realistically put West Brom out of contention for the finish in the top half of the table. Tony Pulis’ side conceded ten goals in those three defeats but they got two back in the weekend’s 2 – 0 win over Crystal Palace. The assistant head coach of the Baggies, David Kemp is hoping for a similar performance against the five-time European champions.
“It was a big win for us after two disappointing performances in the two previous home games against QPR and Leicester,” Kemp said in the club’s official website. So to go there and produce the display we did was very good. I don’t know if it was a case of relief but we don’t want to be losing games after what happened in the previous two. We’d been pretty consistent since we’ve been here and they were a shock to the system because they were disappointing results and performances. We had to get back on track and fair play to the lads, they did it. People start writing you off – you have a couple of defeats and people start putting the boot in. The lads showed great character as well to go and get the right result. We have to do that again.”
