Fu started and ended the first session of the match against Jimmy Robertson with two breaks of over 50 points, 61, 87 and 56, 66, while Jimmy Robertson managed to score a break of 80 points in the fifth frame, surprisingly the session ended only 5-4 for Hong Kong’s finest player over the years. Sussex’s Robertson won the opening frame of the second session with a century of 106. World number 11 Fu responded with 70 and 88 to take the next two before Robertson claimed the next to make it 7-6 at the interval. Jimmy Robertson had chances to level the tie in the crucial 14th frame but could not take them and allowed Fu to clear from the last red for 8-6. That proved the decisive moment as Fu knocked in breaks of 63 and 73 in the next two frames to secure victory.
“I felt really good throughout the match but I was making mistakes as well. I’m still missing too many at the moment, but overall I’m cueing much better than I have been so far. I’m very pleased to get through the first round. I just need to find the balance right mentally because I still really haven’t found the secret of doing well in this tournament, because there’s something different about it.”
Trump had a 7-2 lead after first session against Stuart Carrington. The first two frames were shared before Trump went 4-1 ahead with top breaks of 54, 53 and 60. Crucible debutant Carrington cleared from brown to pink to steal frame six, but Bristol’s Trump finished the session superbly with 85, 62 and 85. The second session of the match started with a re-rack , followed by a 97 points break from Carrington which won him the first frame. In the second frame Carrington missed on a 26 points break, Judd came at the table and produced a winning break of 74 points. Carrington missed the century also in the third frame of the second session as being on a 74 break he potted the last red but in the same time the pink went in the right middle pocket. Stuart managed to win the first half, 3-1, by a virtue of a 70 points break. After the interval Trump relieved himself going 9-5 up with a break of 76 points. Judd brilliantly potted the first red in frame 16 but missed the third one with the rest, Stuart winning the frame with a break of 99 points, by missing the final black denying himself the first Crucible century. Trump won the next frame with a century of 109 eventually securing a 10-6 victory.
“There’s obviously a few things I need to work on but other than that I feel very confident.” Trump said. “My results have shown that I’m playing some good stuff, I felt like I played well over the past two days.”
