Euroleague is widely recognized a as the top European tier of basketball and the best competition for clubs in Europe. The 2015/2016 season is at its full swing and now already we have multiple teams presenting their candidacy for the final four and for the title. The title defender from 2014/2015 season is Real Madrid, which is enjoying a mixed campaign right now.
CSKA Moscow will host Barcelona, in what might be Barcelona’s last train to save this season and keep the hope of qualifying for the top four alive.
After nine matches in the last 16 tier, CSKA Moscow lies on top of their group recording seven wins and only two losses, a record second only to Fenerbahce in the whole league. These two loses came against their bitter rivals Khimky in the first game of the season and against Laboral Kutxa. CSKA entered a fine run of form in the latest months and has managed to win their last five matches without major problems.
Barcelona on the other hand is enjoying a very mixed campaign and a record of four wins out of nine matches is pretty dissapointing for a team with their ambitions. Tomi? and Navarro are Barcelona’s leading players for yet another season and they are expected to shine in this game as well. However, Barcelona’s form is pretty poor in recent games and they seem to have adopted a hot’n’cold system to their game, with three wins in the last six games.
CSKA and Barcelona played their first game in Moscow and CSKA won comfortably, despite a slow start. CSKA used their experience and managed to create major difference in the second and third quarter while Barcelona couldn’t keep up. Higgins with 20 points stud out in the Moscow based team, while Barcelona relied on Navarro and Tomi? again. It was 92-83 at the end. However, CSKA did not enjoy much success against Barca in recent years and won only one of their last four meetings in Spain.
Barcelona finds themselves in a desperate situation as they lie fifth on the table with a 4-5 score and anything but a win here would drift them further apart from Khimki, which hold the fourth position at the moment. CSKA certainly emerges as a clear favorite in this game, but we can expect a strong resistance from a brave Barcelona side.
